A Cycling Enthusiast
On Sunday June 7th in Saratoga Springs Bob Colucci is riding in the Tour de Cure for Diabetes. Bob is riding with the Saratoga Firefighters who have devoted this ride to the memory of Chief Dan Spratt, class of ‘66.
Bob got his enthusiasm for cycling in 1966, his senior year at Catholic Central, when he rode his bicycle from Hill Street in Troy to school with some of his classmates. But that was then, much younger and this is now. Even Bob can’t believe his interest in cycling today. Today, Bob rides twice weekly with a group of senior citizens, weather permitting, from April 1st to November 30th. They ride their bikes mostly on bike trails in the Capital District. In our youth, those bike trails were known as active rail lines with occasional trains on them. When not cycling with the seniors Bob has been know to mountain bike with friends in the Pine Bush, Wilton Preserve and Santanoni in the Adirondacks.
Bob is training for a special bike ride this summer. In July 2009 he will be participating in the 400 mile Erie Canal Ride sponsored by Parks and Trails New York from Buffalo to Albany. This trip last for eight days with camping along the way at various schools and parks.
Bob retired from the New York State Department of Transportation in March 2003 and lives with his wife Bonnie in Albany. Bob plays alto sax and is a volunteer musician with the Nassau-East Greenbush Community band. He and his wife have two grown children Michael and Dillon.
Below is a photo of Bob before one of his cycling rides through rural Albany County.
